Dehradun : A naming ceremony was organized for three baby elephants by the officials of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve at its Chila range on the occasion of the annual wildlife week. A two and half years old female elephant, which was brought from the Shyampur range of Haridwar forest division, was fondly named Rani by the staff. Another seven-month-old female calf and a six-month old male calf were named as Juhi and Johnny respectively. Three adult elephants who had died this year, including Raja who was killed after a fight with a wild elephant, were also paid tributes.

Chila warden, Ajay Sharma said, “There are five elephants, including three calves in the Chila range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve. Radha and Rangeli are two adult female elephants who are being used for patrolling after Raja died last month. The calves are healthy and have been kept under the veterinarian’s observation.”
Two and a half years old Rani was brought to Chila range nearly two years ago as a six-month old from Sthe hyampur range of Haridwar forest division where she had separated from the herd. Seven-month old Juhi was brought from Badkot range of Dehradun forest division earlier this year, while six-month old Johnny was brought from Motichor range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve in May, 2017 when it was two-month old.
Veterinarian at the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, Dr Aditi Sharma, said, “We use items such as infant formula to feed the baby elephants. Trained and experienced care takers have been deployed to handle the calves.” M S Nawaz
